Mannie Jackson Center for the Humanities

Approved, Under Construction

In 2008, former Lincoln School student and Harlem Globetrotter Mannie Jackson bought the vacant building for $600,000 and donated it to Lewis & Clark Community College, along with another $200,000 for an endowment. The college then put $4.5 million in life-safety funds into a major renovation of the building.

The Lincoln School opened in 1912 (pictured here) as the segregated school for black students. After Edwardsville schools integrated in 1951, it served as an elementary school, then later as a fraternity house. Now it has been remodeled into the Mannie Jackson Center for the Humanities Photo courtesy of the Madison County Historical Society
